The Bright Side: April’s Monthly Dose of Joy
We all need a little sunshine in our lives, and sometimes it comes from the most unexpected places. Welcome to The Bright Side, where each month we’ll bring you heartwarming stories that remind us there’s plenty to smile about. Here are five stories sure to lift your spirits this month:
1. Mend it like you mean it: Fashion Gets a Makeover
On April 26, 2025, Fashion Revolution hosted its annual “Mend in Public Day,” encouraging individuals worldwide to repair and upcycle their clothing as a stand against the environmental impacts of fast fashion. This initiative, inspired by the WWII-era “Make Do and Mend” campaign, aims to combat the fashion industry’s contribution to 10% of global carbon emissions . Participants gathered in public spaces to mend garments, sparking conversations about sustainability and the value of extending the life of our clothes .
2. Chicago’s Two Wheeled Triumph: Pedalling Towards a Greener Future
Chicago’s nonprofit Working Bikes has reached a significant milestone by refurbishing and donating over 150,000 bicycles since its inception in 1999. These bikes are distributed both locally and internationally, providing sustainable transportation options and reducing landfill waste . The organisation not only promotes environmental sustainability but also supports communities by enhancing mobility and access to essential services.
3. A Quardruple Dose of Joy
In a remarkable event, Rachel and Marco Vargas from Rhode Island welcomed identical quadruplet daughters - Sofía, Philomena, Veronica, and Isabel- without any fertility treatments. This natural conception is estimated to occur in about 1 in 11 million cases . Born at 30 weeks on January 24, 2025, the quadruplets spent several weeks in neonatal intensive care before joining their family at home, bringing immense joy and wonder to their parents and siblings.

4. Three Charming Donkeys in Rehoming Scheme
Monte, Muldoon, and Junior - three charming donkeys - have found their forever home through The Donkey Sanctuary’s rehoming scheme in Devon. Previously, they were part of the sanctuary’s Donkey Assisted Activities programme, providing comfort and support to individuals in the community. Now, they reside in a peaceful paddock in Devon with Sam (pictured), bringing joy and companionship to their new guardians.
The rehoming scheme not only offers donkeys like Monte, Muldoon, and Junior a chance to thrive in a loving environment but also frees up space at the sanctuary for other donkeys in need. It’s a heartwarming testament to the positive impact of compassion and second chances, enriching the lives of both the donkeys and their new families.
5. “Do the Right Thing” Awards: Celebrating Youth Positivity
In Palm Springs, California, the “Do the Right Thing” program honored local students in April 2025 for their positive attitudes and contributions to the community. This initiative recognizes young individuals who exemplify commendable behavior, fostering a culture of kindness and responsibility among youth. The awards serve as a reminder of the positive impact that young people can have on their communities.
That’s all for this month’s edition of The Bright Side. Amoungst all of the bad, I hope they prove that joy is all around us. Here’s to finding the bright side in your day and we’ll be back next month with more moments to make you smile!
